NATURAL DYES

SOURCED: Mumbai, India
ROOH PIECES: All collections

Our fabrics are dyed before the patterns are cut or sewn, where the colour is applied as desired straight after the fabric has been woven. As part of our sustainable focus and environmental consciousness, we use only natural dyes in the making of our garments. These natural dyes are made by hand, including organic indigo vat dye obtained from plants, and made with flowers, vegetables, herbs, barks and roots, local to the streets of Mumbai. The dyes are also fully biodegradable and do not contain any synthetic or harmful toxins, plus they often require less water and energy when they are made.

The traditional dyeing process involves washing and preparing the fabric, then rinsing and cleaning after it has has its dye bath. The dyeing units we work with adopt sustainable practises such as reusing the dye bath water and sun drying the fabrics. These processes are all performed by hand by our artisans in India, making these tasks time consuming and impractical for larger, commercial factories. Using natural dyes is therefore a conscious choice to make sustainable and ethically made garments at Rooh Collective.

As each dye batch is performed by hand, no batch is the same, making each production run different and unique, displaying what we think are the benefits of a small collections.
